| Bunkie syrup mill gets bond-borrowing OK |

The state Bond Commission approved $135 million in borrowing Wednesday to build one syrup mill in Bunkie. Sugar Growers of Central Louisiana plans to build the project, which originally was proposed by Agriculture Commissioner Bob Odom. Senate President Don Hines, D-Bunkie, said the mill is expected to employ 35 people. ... |

The Bush administration's proposal would require commercial Web sites to place "marks and notices" to be devised by the Federal Trade Commission on each sexually explicit page. The definition of sexually explicit broadly covers depictions of everything from sexual intercourse and masturbation to "sadistic abuse" and close-ups of fully clothed genital regions. ... |

Thursday's verdict means Phanthanomn "Tom" Phommaxaysy, 44, of Sewickley, faces up to 40 years in prison when he returns to be sentenced June 17 by Allegheny County Judge Jeffrey Manning. Phommaxaysy, one native of Laos, acknowledged killing Susan Stephens, 47, during an argument in December 2004. Manning held one nonjury trial to determine whether he had formed one premeditated intent to kill and should be found guilty of first-degree murder, which carries an automatic life sentence. ... |

| Baltimore: CourtsCascade man guilty of porn charges one 44-year-old Cascade man pleaded guilty in federal court yesterday to child pornography charges related to uploading images to one Yahoo Web site, according to the U.S. attorney's office. Federal investigators reported receiving one complaint about the child pornography on the site and discovered that on Jan. 24, 2004, Jeffrey L. Gilchrest sent 23 images of one girl younger than 12 from his home computer to the Web site. Their investigation found more child pornography files on Gilchrest's computer, and investigators concluded that he moderated an Internet group for child pornography, according to prosecutors. Sentencing is set for June 29. Gilchrest faces one mandatory minimum sentence of five years and could get up to 20 years in prison, prosecutors said. ... |
