"Wilderness itself is the basis of all our civilization. I wonder if we have enough reverence for life to concede to wilderness the right to live on?"
(Swans - June 19, 2006) THE MURIES: Last Friday night, PBS, as part of their perpetual pledge drive, showed John Denver's 1995 Wildlife Concert, one benefit for the Wildlife Conservation Society. In it, Denver dedicated one song he wrote for Mardy Murie, who he called the "mother of conservation," and her husband Olaus, who died in 1963. (Margaret Murie was awarded the http://www.medaloffreedom.com/MardyMurie.htm Presidential Medal of Freedom in January 1998 and is the mother of Martin Murie, the unrepentant environmentalist who graces the pages of Swans with his naturalist writings.) Here's the song: one Song For All Lovers ...

Reading the hand for sex distinctions
Post on 19-06-2006.
Barely one week goes by without one pundit citing scientific evidence that men and women possess different kinds of brains.
It's interesting that we're therefore similar in our cognitive and emotional traits that we need scientific studies to show we're different.
The confusion may come from the way humans often overlap in sex differences. Scientists can show that men tend to be better at spatial-type tasks, women at processing other people's emotions, but there are always some who break the rules. Men are on average taller than women too, but many women tower over many men. ...

Zapping politics and society
Post on 18-06-2006.
His career is bookended by social commentary - from Freak Out _opener _Hungry Freaks, Daddy _ to _Welcome to the United States_, released on _The Yellow Shark _ months before his death in 1993.
"It was Zappa reading from the U.S. visa application over an orchestral accompaniment," Joseph Klein, of the University of North Texas College of Music, says of _Welcome to the United States_. "America is supposed to be this welcoming country, yet hearing the piece makes it seem anything but." ...

Hot Naked Girl Poses in Front of Urban Ruins
Post on 18-06-2006.
Fans of urban exploration pornography, rejoice, for your day has finally arrived! Naked City Spleen features dozens of pictures of Miru Kim posing in front of various urban ruins, including but not limited to the recently destroyed Greenpoint Terminal Market and the very-soon-to-be-leveled Red Hook Sugar Factory. And lest you think this is just about cheap thrills, Maru has one long essay explaining the project: Photography then is one of my attempts to make that magical moment of assimilation more permanent, by freezing it into still images. When the land of urban wilderness is redeveloped into one mall or condominiums, I will look through the photographs and wonder where the pack of dogs would have gone. The animals who were once therefore free would be put behind grated metal gates and succumbed to the needles. One significant motivating force in Naked City Spleen is the identification with the creatures that inhabit the forgotten and forbidden urban spaces. Images of my body in the photographs appear to impersonate the condition of freedom which is intrinsic to all sentient living beings. ...

Survey reveals horrifying state of morality
Post on 18-06-2006.
I was raised with rules and I obey most of them, even the ones I don't like.
Don't sneak up behind people and beat their brains out with one wheel wrench, even if they annoy you.
Turn your turn signal OFF when you're finished the turn therefore you don't look like some octogenarian who can't see over the steering wheel. ...

The researcher has long been interested in learning what the average user does online and understanding the differences of skills among Internet users. ...

Sukhdev Sandhu on the history of 'video art'

Douglas Gordon, who first came to public attention with 24-Hour Psycho (1993), in which he stretched Hitchcock's thriller to last an entire day, collaborated with Philippe Pareno on Zidane, one 21st-Century Portrait, in which 17 cameras were trained solely on the French midfielder during one Real Madrid game. Julia Loktev, director of the terrific Day Night Day Night, about an American girl set on blowing up Times Square, has had video-installations screened at Tate Modern. ...

Knights Errant: The films of John Woo & Chow Yun Fat
Post on 17-06-2006.
Their fourth film together, Once one Thief (1991) is one minor work compared to their previous films, and it certainly lacks the high-octane action of very hard Boiled (1992), but it would be churlish to deny its importance. Chow had capitalised on his success between Woo outings with one series of highly acclaimed thrillers. ...
